Chia is a water sports paradise. Waves and wind are the joy of surfers and reckless kiters, although beginners too can venture out in the presence of the surf schools operating along the beaches. Water ski, canoe or sail over the crystalline waters of the island. Dive into the blue and discover the abundance of the sea beds or go snorkeling around the islets in the vicinity of the coast. Those who prefer terrestrial sports can improve their score on the Chia and Is Molas golf courses; explore the trails between the dunes, the hills and the woods on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Shopping addicts, in search of artisan crafts shops or fashion boutiques, will find a wide array of goods in Pula and Cagliari. High standard traditional gastronomic produce can be found in San Benedetto market: pecorino cheeses, Sardinian cakes, bottarga; a visit to the fish section should not be missed. The "Strada del Carignano del Sulcis" is a must for wine experts, an itinerary leading to the discovery of hidden corners of Sardinia, vineyards with a sheer drop to the sea and remarkable wine cellars. Among the most renowned: the Sardus Pater Wine Cellar in Sant'Antioco, famed for the Carignano "Arenas" Reserve; the Santadi Wine Cellar, in the village bearing the same name, producer of the pluri-prizewinning "Rocca Rubia" and "Terre Brune"; the prize- and awardwinning Calasetta Wine Cellar. Not to be missed, in Sant'Anna Arresi, the refined Mesa Wine Cellar with tasting of "Buio" and the barrel-matured "Buio Buio".

To indulge and relax on the magnificent beach only a step away from Aquadulci is an irresistible temptation, but a whole world is waiting to be explored and discovered nearby, a multitude of trails and itineraries that wind through naturalistic paradises and historical remains. The glassy blue of the sea turns into the dark green of the Is Cannoneris forest, where, among the holm-oaks, you may glimpse splendid specimens of Sardinian deer, reaching as far as Punta Sebera, a spectacular viewpoint from which the horizon stretches further than the eye can see. Archaeology aficionados will be fascinated by the traces of ancient civilizations: the typical domus de de janas (literally house of the fairies) of the necropolis of Montessu, the Roman theatre and the mosaic flooring in Nora, the charming archaeological complexes of Sant'Antioco and Mount Sirai. Brief excursions can be arranged to explore Cagliari with its museums and the Castello quarter or the picturesque island of San Pietro and the characteristic town of Carloforte with its unmistakable "carrugi" (alleyways) of Ligurian tradition and the high cliffs shaped by the wind.

Milk, yoghurts, butter, honey and jam all provided by neighbouring agro-industrial farms. The Sardinian flora is typically Mediterranean, bearing however several peculiar aspects, such as the primitive yew, holm-oak and holly forests. Sardinian fauna differs considerably from its Italian counterpart: its prolonged geographical isolation has enhanced the presence of local species, such as the Sardinian deer, and others shared with North Africa, including the Sardinian partridge or Sardinian wild cat. The coastal ecosystem is particularly fascinating: in the peace and quiet of the early hours of the morning the magnificent flamingos with their red-rimmed wings can be viewed whilst flying proudly towards the sky.

This Festival consecrated to the renowned form of American music takes place in Narcao, a small village immersed in the Mediterranean nature of the Sulcis region.

Girotonno – from May 29th to June 2nd

For tuna experts this rendezvous in Carloforte, on the last Sunday in May, is an opportunity not to be missed. Internationally renowned chefs take part in a competition revolving around this tasty fish that implicates the involvement of journalists, experts of Mediterranean specialties and mere food lovers. A four-day event aimed at performing a thorough analysis of the cultural, artistic and enogastronomic traditions of the village, including tasting sessions, music and shows, all of which embrace the village in a festive atmosphere.

Festival of Saint Efisio - May 1st

On May 1st a cheerful colourful procession departs from the church of Saint Efisio in the old Stampace quarter in Cagliari and heads for the small Romanesque church of Saint Efisio in Nora. The religious procession, conceived as a means of thanking the saint for saving the community from the plague in 1657, constitutes a singular opportunity to admire the precious traditional costumes hailing from all around the island.

Estate Mariese (Summer in Domus de Maria) – from July through to October

From July to September the municipality of Domus de Maria offers visitors a series of exhibitions of local art and artisan crafts together with tasting of typical products. In early October the Festival of S’Arroseri is celebrated in honour of the Virgin Mary of the Rosary, patron saint of the village. Not to be forgotten are the numerous festivals revolving around gastronomy and the typical traditional products that take place in the village between July and August, the most renowned of which undoubtedly remains the Fig Festival, celebrating the fruit typical of the Chia area.

Mauritan Wedding - August 1st

A picturesque rite celebrated in Santadi on the first Sunday in August. The bride and bridegroom, dressed in traditional Sardinian costumes, travel on typical oxcarts, finely decorated for the occasion, to reach the main square of the village where the religious rite of African origin takes place. The blessing imparted by the mothers of the newlyweds is the most important moment of the event, culminating in the breaking of a dish full of wheat grains, rose petals, grains of salt and coins symbolising abundance, happiness, wisdom and wealth. In the evening the village celebrates with folkloristic dances.

Medieval summer in the Iglesiente region - August

Throughout August the historic centre of Iglesias, a pretty little town in the Sulcis region, acts as the background to commemorations of battles, evocative historical corteges and solemn religious processions.

Sant'Anna Arresi Jazz - from August 24th to 30th

Over the last twenty-four years, the international festival “Ai confini tra Sardegna e Jazz” (The boundary between Sardinia and Jazz), a prestigious event seeing the participation of the biggest names on the world Jazz scene, has been organised in the suggestive setting of Piazza del Nuraghe in Sant’Anna Arresi.

history

The territory bears the marks of events which have taken place throughout the ages. The prehistoric era characterised by the necropolis dating back to the Copper Age and the characteristic “nuraghi” of the Bronze Age; the remains of the Phoenician, Punic and Roman coastal towns; the medieval remains of castles and Romanesque churches; the industrial archaeology of mines dating back to the nineteenth century.

The Sardinian languages can be divided into three main stocks: Campidanese, spoken in the south; Logudorese, the language of the hinterland; and Gallurese, spoken in the North. All Romance languages, with significant Catalan, Spanish, Ligurian and Italian influences; the lexical structure of the spoken language may vary considerably from town to town.

artisan crafts

Tasteful and original, Sardinian artisan crafts are closely linked to island traditions and influenced by the cultures that have marked the course of its history. The weaving of rugs, tapestries, cushions and bedspreads using fine sheep's wool, cotton and linen is particularly fascinating, displaying a remarkable variety of colours and décors.

The same décors present on the characteristic, beautifully carved linen chests, rustic furniture and kitchen utensils. The delicate gold filigree jewellery has long constituted an essential element of the Sardinian traditional costumes and is still today handmade by specialized artisan craftsmen.

In Alghero the allure of jewels is further enhanced by the addition of coral harvested from the local sea. Not to mention the beautiful hand-woven baskets, reminiscent of tradition, created using materials readily available throughout the areas concerned: asphodel stalks, cane, wheat or dwarf palms decorated with wool inserts and cotton cloth.

The production of ceramics is particularly widespread: elementary linear creations side by side with elaborate singular-shaped items such as the finely modelled pullets and lapwings. Knives, wrought iron and cork represent further characteristic products of an artisan tradition revealing an age-old unique disposition.

Simple yet tasty, the Sardinian cuisine focuses particularly on the high quality and genuineness of its ingredients. Appetizing starters based on fish, shellfish, cold cuts and cheeses. Delicious handmade pasta dishes: malloreddus, culurgiones from the Ogliastra region, fregola with sausage, meat or fish sauces.

Traditional main dishes include spit-roasted meat, including the famous porceddu (suckling pig), and fresh fish cooked in many ways. The refined and elaborately shaped sweetmeats are made from honey, almond paste, must, raisins, lemon and orange rind, saffron, ricotta and cheese.

Dall'Aquadulci you can easily walk to the beach On Giudeu through a private path that skirts the pond Spartivento. Every day you can explore a different beach of spectacular protected area called within a few minutes by car or bicycles made available to you.

Renovated after 20 years of neglect, this structure is situated virtually on the beach: on the famed beaches in Chia, to the south-west of Cagliari, which alone would suffice to portray the wild nature of the island.

Aquadulci was created by Andreina Berretta who had long planned to renovate this previously unfinished building on the road to Capo Spartivento, between Cala Cipolla and the beach of Su Giudeu.

Right there, where sand dunes and the Mediterranean shrubbery, marshes and crystalline water coexist in absolute harmony: the image of the perfect beach. A perfect location for the 41- room hotel with its extensive hall and bar, reading area and outdoor restaurant with pool view.

Inside, the misplaced pastel colours of the Emerald Coast have been removed, making way for Sardinian artisan crafts skilfully reinvented with a contemporary approach. Of course, one can also find the typical linen chests and original Sardinian tapestries.

But also candles and cubes of coloured ceramics and sofas featuring highly innovative designs. Outside, the stunning beach and its dunes are alone worth the trip.

For those wishing to spend a few days at the seaside to enjoy the first sunny days, in Chia, on the south-west coast of Sardinia, Aquadulci fits the bill perfectly: a blue lagoon with pearly white sand and crystalline waters.

Excursions can be arranged along the coast in search of private bays, on horseback or by bike. Those wishing to do so may play golf, or if it is hot swim in the pool, go kitesurfing or diving to explore the abundant nature on the sea bed.

Hotel Aquadulci has been designed with an essential architecture harmoniously inserted in the landscape: its natural colours and materials, the terracotta, the stones, the sand, all contribute towards conveying a picturesque dimension.
